Document Description
This document is prepared as an Addendum to the initial study and MND adopted by the San Bernardino International Airport Authority in August of 2014. In 2014, SBIAA prepared an Initial Study that evaluated the proposed application from Unical Aviation to establish an aircraft demolition facility in the northeastern portion of the Airport. Aircraft demolition consists of manually stripping reusable equipment and then demolishing the fuselage, tail and wings by using large crushing equipment to obtain recyclable materials such as aluminum. Retired jet aircraft are brought to the demolition site and stripped of their reusable and recyclable equipment/parts and this equipment is transported to an offsite storage location. Then, the aircraft is crushed and the residual material, primarily aluminum, is transported to an offside recycling facility. Thus, in effect, the whole aircraft is recycled for equipment reuse and new material for future use.
