Document Description
This proposed project is an off-site medical waste treatment facility, as defined and regulated by the Medical Waste Management Act (MWMA), contained in Sections 117600 through 118360 of CA Health and Safety Code. The facility would dispatch trucks to collect contaminated medical waste in sealed containers, which would then be returned to the facility for treatment. The majority of waste would originate from facilities like hospitals, medical and dental clinics, convalescent homes, laboratories, and doctor's offices. However, the facility would also receive medical waste from trauma scenes. Trauma scene waste includes materials tainted with human blood and tissue collected from trauma scenes such as vehicle accidents sites, shooting sites, collapsed buildings, etc. The waste would be treated at the facility to sterilize the contaminated material and kill any infectious organisms. After treatment, the waste would be considered solid waste which would then be disposed of in a landfill.
