Document Description
This project represents a change in the design of the C-17 Assault Landing Zone currently under construction on Travis AFB. The original design, assessed in a September 2008 EA, included dirt shoulders along the edges of the landing zone. Following the beginning of construction it was determined that similar dirt shoulders at another air base were particularly susceptible to erosion from the vortex created by C-17 aircraft. As a result, the Air Force proposes to change the shoulder design at Travis to include the installation of pre-fabricated articulated concrete blocks to minimize soil erosion. These blocks will result in additional permanent impact over the original design and so a supplemental EA and FONSI have been prepared for review.
