Document Description
Rehabilitate existing drainage system for Elephant Hill perimeter dirt road at Hearst San Simeon State Historic Monument. Install PCC swale and three graded PCC catch basins in the western-most portion of Elephant Hill. Also, install an additional swale between existing electrical shed and loading docks and graded PCC catch basin, to drain into existing catch basin on inside road shoulder. Rip rap will be placed directly below CMP spill point to deter erosion during periods of heavy rain. All work will occur within existing footprint of road easement or previously disturbed areas adjacent to road. Two concrete masses lie in path of uppermost swale and may be remnants of tanks or pools used by Hearst's exotic animals. Excavation around structures will occur by hand until identification is possible. A DPR archeologist will be present during excavation. If masses are an indication of a larger, subsurface feature, work will be halted until discovery can be documented and historic significance, if any, determined. Work will not resume in this area until documentation and any other preservation efforts, if any, are completed. All work will occur in a manner consistent with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
